Northern Virginia Business Law

Taking care of business since 2010

Located in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Haymarket, Virginia, Northern Virginia Business Law represents businesses of all sizes - from the newest startup to established companies.

My name is Brad McConnell, and I have been helping businesses navigate the often complex world of contracts and the law for more than 20 years.

I got my start in the 90s tech boom, when every company with ".com" seemed to get financing before they even had a product. Since then, my clients have come from a wide range of industries.

One of the most important services I can provide is helping you understand and negotiate the terms of the many contracts and agreements necessary to run your business - always bearing in mind that every contract is about a relationship with someone who is important to your business, whether they are your partner, an employee, a supplier or a customer.

As a small-business owner myself, I understand the importance of providing value. Most times, a brief phone call is more helpful than a comprehensive treatise on the case law related to your question.

Your business has needs. And those needs change over time as your company grows and adapts.

Startups needs to worry about formation, structuring, dealing with founders and new employees.

Growing companies may be bringing on employees or contractors, leasing new space, or borrowing money to fund their growth.

Fast-growing companies may need to bring on outside investors or acquire other companies to help them get to the next level. And almost every business needs to figure out to deal with their customers.

We can help you navigate (and negotiate) all of the challenges.

Bradley McConnell

Before striking out on my own to start Northern Virginia Business Law, I was Senior Counsel in the Mergers & Acquisitions practice group at Holland & Knight. Prior to that, I was a senior associate in the Venture Capital and Emerging Growth Companies practice group at what is now one of the largest law firms in the world, DLA Piper, LLP (then known as Piper Rudnick, LLP).  At Piper, I represented a wide range of start-up and growth companies, and the people and institutions who invested in them.  My practice has also included representing venture capital funds, many mergers and acquisitions transactions and several Initial Public Offerings. In addition to a stint at the firm of Lane & Mittendorf in Washington, DC, I spent several years as the co-founder of a legal software development company, LegalForte.

A Little History

I founded Northern Virginia Business Law in 2010, shortly after the birth of my first child. Hoping to achieve some work/life balance,  I left Holland & Knight, LLP, one of the largest and most prestigious law firms in the United States to set out on my own. At Holland & Knight, I represented companies of all sizes in forming startups, financings, employment matters, contract negotiations and mergers and acquisitions.

In addition to continuing my representation of national clients of all sizes, I set out to grow my practice by focusing on small and growing businesses in the DC metropolitan area.  My favorite part about representing local businesses is the opportunity to meet face-to-face with my clients to better understand their goals and concerns.  Although my practice of more than 20 years has its roots in the tech startup boom of the1990s, I have found that growing companies have a lot of similar concerns and needs, regardless of what industry they occupy.

Whether you are signing an employment agreement with a new employer or arranging a complex round of financing, my goal is to help demystify the process for you and hep you make the best decisions possible without getting bogged down in unreadable "legalese".
